about

Whilst living by my wits on the streets of fin de siècle Paris, I met and adored a young homeless woman who was as fearless as she was beautiful. This is the story of our first meeting.

lyrics

She was then eighteen,
she lived alone upon the roof
of a hotel beneath the skies
among the cats and starlings.

No one found her out until
the day I stole a watch
and climbed up there so I could hide
among the cats and starlings.

She saw me, I screamed as she bit me.

I threw her the watch
she didn't care what time it was
and couldn't read it if she did
and only went on biting.

She was just as strong
as something wild and twice her size
and when at last I threw her off
I knew I must be bleeding.

Scared and free and wild and so lonely.
